We read lots of books in 4K. I read to them, they read to themselves, they read to each other. We read nonfiction and fiction. At the end of each day, I pick a kid (or two or three, depending on time) to choose a book, any book, for me to read to the class. Certain books get chosen way more often then others. So, if you're looking for books that will keep the interest of a 4 or 5 year old, here are our favorites.
10. Hatch is a lift the flap book. The kids like to 'read' the book to each other and have their friends (or me) guess what is under the flap. They give each other clues. Obviously, everyone knows what is under each flap by now, but they still love it!
9. You Will Be My Friend is a book about a bear who just wants a friend. It's a lot hard making friends than she thought it would be. My 4Kers like the illustrations and think the ending is pretty funny.
8. Peek-A Who? is another book that they can 'read' to each other. It's also another one that they like to read to a friend and have the friend guess the rhyme. At first they thought board books were only for babies. Then they realized they could read them easier than other books and now they love them!
7. No, David! is only one of their favorites because David runs down the street naked on one of the pages and they think it is hilarious. I like the bright colors in the illustrations, but I'm not really a fan of the sassy things David does in the book.
6. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a classic. The illustrations are bold and friendly for little eyes. The words are catchy and I find myself chanting/singing this book every time I read it. My 4Kers like when I read a little bit and then they repeat it. Chicka Chicka 123 has the same feel, but focuses on numbers instead of letters.
4. Who Made This Cake? is a good book to act out. We do the motions and make the noises. Of course we have to sing the happy birthday song at the end when the cake is finished :)
3. Today Is Monday is a story you can sing. The 4kers like when I sing first and they repeat. If things get a little crazy in our classroom, I can whip out this book and everyone settles down right away.
2. Superhero ABC is an alphabet book that is all about super heros. Each letter gets a page or two and a super hero that goes along with the letter. The 4Kers like to pick "who they are" in the book. This is not a most picked book purely because I have a few superhero-loving boys in my classes- I have more girls than boys in the AM and the PM. I love that the girls love this book too.
1. Hiding Phil is by far the most loved book. The AM class chooses it a couple times a week. The PM class chooses it almost every day (and sometime more than once in a day). The illustrations are bright and engaging. Even though there aren't many words, it's funny, suspenseful (for 4 and 5 year olds), and has a happy ending :) We love this book.
There are so many awesome children's books out there. What are your (or your kid's) favorites?
